Development of a neural network model for predicting glucose levels in a surgical critical care setting

Abstract (provisional)

Development of neural network models for the prediction of glucose levels in critically ill patients through the application of continuous glucose monitoring may provide enhanced patient outcomes. Here we demonstrate the utilization of a predictive model in real-time bedside monitoring. Such modeling may provide intelligent/directed therapy recommendations, guidance, and ultimately automation, in the near future as a means of providing optimal patient safety and care in the provision of insulin drips to prevent hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

Insertion torque is not a good predictor of pedicle screw loosening after spinal instrumentation: a prospective study in 8 patients

Abstract (provisional)

Background

Pedicle screw loosening is a major safety concern in instrumented spinal surgery due to loosening with potential pseudarthrosis and possible loss of correction requiring revision surgery. Several cadaver studies have compared insertion torque of pedicle screws with resistance to pullout or cyclic loading. In most of these studies, a correlation has been found between these variables. Clinical studies have been made, comparing insertion torque to bone mineral density or radiological signs of screw loosening. There are no clinical studies comparing insertion torque to extraction torque or other biomechanical parameters in vivo.

A mid term comparison of open wedge high tibial osteotomy vs unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee

Abstract (provisional)

Background

The choice of surgical treatments for unicompartment osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is still somewhat controversial. Midterm results from cases treated using unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) or open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) were evaluated retrospectively.

Methods

Twenty-seven knees of 24 patients with varus deformities underwent OWHTO and 30 knees of 18 patients underwent UKA surgeries for the treatment of medial compartmental osteoarthritis (OA).

Dr. Body (Dr. Linder): The range of breast implants is huge. There are many different sizes, depending on how large a woman wants to be. Available are tear-drop shaped and round breast implants; choices of smooth or textured shells and choices of implants that will determine how far in front a breast will extend. We surgeons know that measurement as projection.

Plastic Surgery Beauty Wishes – by Ages

Dr. Face: Teenagers are an interesting group, don’t you think, doctor?

I recently rejuvenated the broken noses of two 14-year-olds and they had the maturity level of 25-year-olds.

Dr. Body: Absolutely! One of the driving forces with teens is to mesh well with their peer groups. So if a teen girl under 18 comes to me with very small breasts, or conversely, with very huge breasts (medically known as gigantomastia), I will be more likely to go ahead with breast augmentation or breast reduction if her present state is causing her misery or embarrassment. Treatment of refractory hip pain with sodium hyaluronate (Hyalgan) in a patient with the Marshall-Smith Syndrome: A case report

Abstract (provisional)

The Marshall Smith Syndrome (MSS) is a rare congenital disorder, displaying a constellation of unique symptoms, including orofacial dysmorphisms, accelerated osseous maturation and dysplasias, mental retardation, and respiratory maladies. Few individuals with MSS survive past early childhood. In this case report, we describe a unique treatment for a 30 year-old patient with MSS who presented to our pain medicine clinic for management of pain secondary to uncontrolled bilateral hip dysplasias.
