March 14th, 2007

Absence of sleep may lead to serious problem, when brain ends to produce new cells. Such conclusion was made by Americans after an experiment made on rats.
Specialists from research institute found out, that the loss of sleep influenced on work of hippocampa, area of cerebrum, participating in work of memory, and the influence is caused by the hormone of stress.
During the experiment scientists compared activity of animal brain, deprived of sleep for 72 hours, with those which slept normally. The first group showed high level of corticosterone, or hormone of stress.
Meantime sleep expert doctor Nil Stanly, who works in the university clinic of the English city Norwich, considers that results of experiment of his American colleagues shouldn’t be straight carried on people, as people do not stay awake during three days, if certainly, they are not in extreme conditions.
Nevertheless, doctor Stanly adds, “It is interesting conclusions. It would be interesting to know, whether the partial loss of sleep leads to a similar effect, when you sleep every night a bit less than is needed for your organism”.
