DHEC Board takes action on ‘bath salts’ and synthetic marijuana

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Board of Health and Environmental Control has reclassified three substances that are commonly known as “bath salts,” and five substances used to make synthetic marijuana as schedule I controlled substances.

“State law authorizes the DHEC Board to designate a substance as a controlled substance in this state if the federal government has issued the same designation,” said Carl Roberts, general counsel for DHEC.

Roberts said the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration listed three substances often marketed as “bath salts,” but actually ingested as psychoactive drugs, as schedule I controlled substances effective Oct. 21. The three sub

Mark Bittman Corrects Fact-Resistant Food Policy Analysts…Such As Mark Bittman

Thanks to Katherine Mangu-Ward’s recent Washington Post op-ed piece about the folly of government efforts to reshape our diets, I noticed a strikingly oblivious Mark Bittman column from last month. “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” the headline asks. The short answer: No, it isn’t. The longer version:

The “fact” that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, “when a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli…” or “it’s more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald’s than to cook a healthy meal for them at home.”

This is just plain wrong. In

Increasing mental health problems in the US?

John Hopkins released some new statistics recently, indicating there has been an increase of about 2 million adults who suffer from mental illness since 1997. These statistics were based on self-reports in 2007, and the specific cause is not indicated. The study was published in the American Journal of Public Health.

When you read about statistics like this, do you question them? I don’t doubt at all there is an increase in self-reporting of mental illness, but I question if there is an actual increase versus more awareness. While the report did not indicate a reason for the increase, the implication was that there are more people disabled from mental illness now versus 10 years ago.

Body Scanner Operators Affected By The Device

It was about to happen, as there were questions regarding the safety of the airport body scanners, and now a story emerges claiming that cancer rates to TSA workers operating the devices has risen.

According to this report, the TSA has been caught covering up the rise in cancer cases of TSA workers who operate these devices. The information was gathered from FOIA or Freedom Of Information Act documents that were acquired by the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

It was the Union for the workers in Boston that noticed the rise in cancer rates amongst their workers and then the TSA tried to avoid the issue by not issuing dosimeters to the workers to test for the measure of levels of exposure. Thats like not giving firefighters, firefighting gear.
