Game - attack inserts the pupil into the immune system of the person (Part 2)

February 12th, 2007

Game takes place in the environment of various “biologically realistic” tissues of a human being. It means that the structures of tissues of a human body were reconstructed in 3D in a strictly scientific way. Immunocytes (immunologically competent cells) fight against bacterial and virus infections which the player, operating nano-robot, can win by reprogramming separate types of “enemy” cells.

The choice is not too large: the player will either learn the immune system to function properly, or will die.

The student - player does not have any weapon, except the central principle of immunology, He (she) can only endow the chosen type of a cell with an additional ability.

Interplaying with the cells as with the personages, in the course of the game students have the right to count on “the Personal training assistant” (My Learning Assistant — MyLA) which will answer questions and will give them proper advice, using the database and the information system “Attack”.

As it should be for the normal computer game, “immune” includes a few levels, from simple to difficult and very difficult. The level is considered to be surmounted after achievement of the definite goals. It usually consists in the destruction of an infection or the illness, including mini-games at different phases.

The main hero of the game is a wonderful teenager in the unique position: he should travel all over the immune system, piloting the microscopic robot to rescue his own life. However, actually the purpose of the game is quite another — to dip the student into the immunology to help him to understand this uneasy subject.

Generally, Federation of the American scientists (FAS) presented the prototype of training game “Immune attack” to the medical community some time ago. So we can already get acquainted with a new product.

Thus, we face first-ever computer strategy on behalf of the first person which teaches principles of immunology in a no conventional way. The player should diligently, level after level, study semi-functional immune system of the person in order to win, otherwise he will not get rid of bacterial and virus infections so — he will never become diplomaed physician.

“The immunology is a complicated and difficult subject for pupils which does not prevent, and even on the contrary, helps it to become an interesting basis for the videogame, — the coordinator of project FAS Eitan Glinert has explained. — The atmosphere of the game gives those people who would not become interested in biology otherwise, an opportunity to get acquainted with a cheerful and practical technique which you will not find in any textbook “.

Smoke of the cigarettes with menthol complicates the throw of the smoker (Part 2)

February 8th, 2007

Doctor Pletcher has said, that is it not clear yet, why it is much harder to give up smoking for those people who smoke menthol cigarettes. According to his opinion one of the reasons, is the “improved” taste together with the freshening effect which reminds the smokers a local anesthesia due to which the smoker receives more pleasure.

It is also possible that menthol extends a delay of breath and influences a metabolism of nicotine which concentration in blood rises in such a way.

On the basis of the received data researchers have concluded, that when “menthol” smokers try to give up a harmful habit, they require a greater social and medical support: these smokers have twice higher chances that they will start smoking again, than “ordinary” smokers have.

“Both doctors and their patients understand that smoking is harmful for the health and it does not depend on the kind of cigarettes you prefer. Either they contain menthol or don’t have it, cigarettes are equally harmful, — informed Pletcher. — But the data received during the examination show: when smokers of cigarettes with menthol try to refuse nicotine, they need the additional help “.

Smoke of the cigarettes with menthol complicates the throw of the smoker (Part 1)

Scientists have discovered that it is much more complicated task for people who smoke cigarettes with menthol to refuse smoking than for those ones who prefer cigarettes without menthol. And it is necessary to note that the cigarettes of both kinds are almost equally harmful for people’s health.

The doctor Mark J. Pletcher with his colleagues from the University of California in San – Francisco came to such a conclusion on the grounds of the research which had been taking place for 15 years with the participation of 1500 smokers.

The participants were examined for the purpose of determining the content of the calcium in their arteries and the state of lungs. They (participants) were also interviewed in detail. The result of the interviewing was: 63 % of the respondents preferred cigarettes with menthol and 36% preferred cigarettes without menthol.

It was also found out that the cigarettes with menthol were smoked on the whole by the young women, unemployed people, overweighted people.
