New Approach For Treating Dry Mouth Presented In JADA-Published Study

A newly published study in the October 2010 issue of The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), conducted at New York University’s College of Dentistry, confirms the safety and efficacy of a new novel method for controlling xerostomia, or dry mouth. The double masked, randomized controlled crossover study concludes that use of a unique mucoadhesive patch, affixed to the hard palate inside the mouth, provides statistically significant and sustainable improvements in salivary flow rates and subjective moistness for dry mouth sufferers. Post-Op Pain May Be Due to Immune Reaction: Study

FRIDAY, Sept. 24 (HealthDay News) — Nerve inflammation may be the cause of pain, numbness and weakness that some patients experience after surgery, according to a new study.

These problems, called postsurgical neuropathies, are typically believed to be the result of compression or stretching of nerves during surgery. But this new study suggests that, in some patients, neuropathy is the result of the immune system attacking the nerves, leading to inflammation. Immune-suppressing drugs may prove effective in such cases, said the Mayo Clinic researchers.

Genetic Test Used By Landmark Dental School Study To Help Predict Gum Disease

University of Michigan School of Dentistry has signed an agreement with Interleukin Genetics Inc. to conduct what may be the largest clinical study to date using genetic testing to assess the risk for gum disease. William Giannobile, professor at U-M dentistry and director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research at the School of Dentistry, will lead the study for U-M. “It’s an exciting study because it’s a way to use genetic testing to personalize a dental treatment plan and the frequency of dental care visits of patients as it relates to oral care,” said Giannobile. “It’s a way to customize patient care.” “One of the goals of personalized health care is to detect disease earlier and prevent it more effectively,” said Kenneth Kornman, president and chief scientific officer of Waltham, Mass.
